in a previous post about hiring the right employees, i mentioned that your loyal customers come into your small business not just to buy something. they come in for the great experience and customer service, which comes directly from well trained employees!
here are a few things to remember when it comes to training your staff.
1. be a great example.
as a small business owner, it’s easy to get bogged down with the day to day tasks of running your business. but you can’t let that keep you from being the best example of customer service for your employees. when your employees see you genuinely caring about those customers and making sure they are having a great experience every time they come in the door, you will inspire them to do the same. if you treat every customer as if they are just another coffee to make, your employees will follow suit.
2. appoint a training leader.
is there a specific employee who stands out with their friendliness, helpfulness, and overall patience with customers? consider making that cheerleader employee a training leader. since they have a great attitude and work ethic, they will be able to set those type of expectations for the new staff right from the start. give your training leader some guidelines and overall goals, and let them lead the way for new people.
3. let the employees see the bigger picture.
your business offers a specific environment and service, so to keep that consistant, there are guidelines you follow. motivate your employees by letting them know why you have these guidelines in place. for instance, during a dinner rush at your restaurant, it may seem unimportant to take the time to air up a balloon for a child’s birthday. however, if you explain that it will create a memorable experience for the family and bring them back in again, your staff will be more inclined to go the extra step.
